April 23, 2020 Asbestos was used in many products and industries throughout the 20th century in Louisiana and across the United States. But despite many regulations limiting the use of this dangerous chemical, exposure to asbestos continues to threaten the safety of Louisiana residents, causing several different forms of cancer—including mesothelioma.
Many Louisiana mesothelioma victims commonly worked in the construction business, the auto industry, petrochemical manufacturing, and in shipyards and harbors up and down the Gulf Coast. This type of exposure to asbestos (known as occupational exposure) also affected these workers’ families, who experienced second-hand exposure to asbestos by breathing dust particles collected on the workers’ clothes that were brought home.
