Live Longer After Diagnosis: Early Screening for Asbestos-Related Cancers Shows Promise

Mesothelioma is a rare but deadly cancer that is caused by exposure to asbestos. Like other cancers, patients have better outcomes the earlier mesothelioma can be diagnosed and treated, but diagnosis is very challenging. Mesothelioma is a malignant growth on the lining of the lungs that can be mistaken for other respiratory ailments or even digestive disorders. One of the things that makes it so dangerous and difficult to detect is that it may take up to 40 years to develop after exposure to asbestos-containing materials. Asbestos was used so widely and in so many industries that some patients may not even realize they were exposed. Because of these obstacles, patients who believe they may have been exposed need regular screenings for lung cancer.

Lung Cancer Screening Prolongs Lives

Lung cancer is the leading cause of death from cancer worldwide, accounting for 18.4% of cancer deaths. Because it is such a high percentage of cancer deaths, researchers have devoted significant resources to studying ways to prevent deaths linked to lung cancer. In the past, when they looked at the value of screenings, researchers found mixed results. However, in a study published in 2020, they found that early detection through screening improves 10-year survival rates. The study looked specifically at low-dose computed tomography (CT) screening. This specific type of x-ray procedure produces cross-sectional images that can be digitally combined to create a 3-D model of the patient. This model makes it easier to see tumors or other abnormalities.

Patients in the study who participated in the screenings had 24% reduction in 10-year mortality rates. Women in the study showed even greater benefits, with a 33% reduction in mortality from lung cancer.

The goal of screening is to catch cancers at an earlier stage, preferably before spreading to other parts of the body. Many lung cancers, including mesothelioma, don’t cause noticeable symptoms until the cancer is in advanced stages.

New Liquid Biopsy Screening Shows Promise for Mesothelioma

Researchers have found a cell that can help detect mesothelioma early, mesothelial precursor cells (MPC). Unfortunately, these cells were hard to identify in blood screening. Researchers developed a new technology, MesoFind, that is able to isolate these cells and assess what those cells showed about the stage of the disease.

With MesoFind and other new tests, it will become easier to screen for this cancer and catch it before symptoms arise. It may also help oncologists personalize treatment by better predicting how the cancer will respond to certain therapies. This field of research has great potential to improve treatment and help patients live longer lives with fewer negative effects.

Although prolonging the life of a patient with mesothelioma is desirable, prevention is even better. The only way to do that is by eliminating the possibility of asbestos exposure

The Dangers of Asbestos Exposure

No amount of asbestos is considered safe, and even though great strides have been made to remove asbestos from our homes, schools, workplaces and gathering spots, we must not lose sight of this fact.

Cancers related to asbestos exposure are completely preventable. Consumers and workers must have access to clear warnings on existing asbestos-products left in place, and bans on new uses of asbestos must be enforced and expanded. Although there may be an initial cost related to these precautions, in the long term, they will eliminate costly medical bills, pain, and heartache for victims of asbestos exposure.

When researching new therapies for lung cancer or mesothelioma, please work with your doctors before starting a treatment or medication to determine whether it is the right choice for your own situation.
