Prolonged Lives with Early Screening: Asbestos-Related Cancers

Mesothelioma is a rare cancer whose earliest mention dates back centuries. It went misdiagnosed, and worse, undiagnosed for years. It’s insidious nature renders it one of the most difficult diseases to detect, as it may take up to 40 years for the malignant growth on the lining of the lungs to develop in an individual. Though the number of mesothelioma patients has gradually declined due to recognition of the dangers asbestos exposure, new cases are continually diagnosed. The same is true of other forms of lung cancer caused by asbestos exposure. The widespread agreement among researchers and doctors alike is that early detection of mesothelioma and lung cancer is what promotes extended longevity. The key to this is consistent screenings for those who believe they have been exposed to asbestos.

Lung Cancer Screening Confirmed to Save Lives

Lung cancer is the leading cause of death from cancer worldwide, claiming 18.4% of those deaths. This disease is one many researchers have explored based on its statistical presence. In a study that looked to determine whether a low-dose CT lung cancer screening significantly aided in the reduction of 10-year lung cancer morality, the findings were promising. The study’s authors cited a nearly 25% reduction in the risk of death from lung cancer at 10 years in patients assigned to such screening. There appears to be an even greater benefit from screening for the sample of women. According to the authors, women screened have a 33% lower lung cancer morality versus unscreened women. While it may seem logical now that early screening is what could most likely guarantee a longer life for a lung cancer patient, such conclusions had previously been deemed erratic. That is no longer the case with similar conclusions being made about different cancers like mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma Detection May Come Earlier with Liquid Biopsy

The earlier a diagnosis of mesothelioma is made, the greater opportunity there is to attempt treatments. With a new approach using state-of-the-art technology, specialists have developed a novel liquid biopsy test for mesothelioma called “CytoFind”. Though the project is yet to be distributed to other researchers for review, it has considerable potential to produce much earlier diagnosis of mesothelioma.

The CytoFind test’s goal is to screen people for the cancer earlier, faster, and more frequently. This is achieved through a few blood samples that are used to isolate tumor cells and analyze protein markers. The test also allows oncologists to determine a more personalized course of treatment for each patient by better predicting their response to specific therapies. It seems clear that solutions like CytoFind bring us one step closer to more valuable treatments. Although prolonging the life of a patient with mesothelioma is desirable, the ideal circumstance is to not contract it at all. The only way to do that is by eliminating the possibility of asbestos exposure.

Asbestos Exposure and Aftermath

The emphasis on the fact that no amount of asbestos exposure is considered “safe” is just as crucial now as it has ever been. Asbestos-related cancers are completely preventable. With clear warnings on existing asbestos-products left in place and bans on new uses of asbestos, exposure can be avoided. Putting those precautions into effect will eliminate costly medical bills, pain, and heartache in the future. Although we are lawyers and not doctors, we recognize that many of our clients are dealing with serious medical issues. When researching new therapies for lung cancer or mesothelioma, it is always important for individuals to speak to their doctors before starting any new treatments or medications. Together patients and doctors can explore the best options for the patient’s specific needs.
