DePuy ASR Hip Replacement

We fight for DePuy ASR hip recipients.

On August 26, 2010, DePuy Orthopaedics, Inc. announced the recall of its DePuy ASR Hip Replacement device. The recall came just five years after the unsafe medical device was first used in the United States.

The two DePuy ASR hip replacements that are part of the recall include:

  • ASR Hip Resurfacing System; and
  • ASR XL Acetabular System.

The DePuy ASR hip implants have been shown to release high levels of metal ions or “wear debris” into a patient’s body. The release of these tiny metal ions may result in a toxic reaction and cause several dangerous and painful side effects. Hip revision surgery may be necessary to take out and replace the hip implant. The injuries may occur soon after the initial DePuy ASR hip replacement surgery or may take years to develop. Side effects and injuries include:

  • tissue damage
  • pseudotumours
  • ALVAL (aseptic lymphocyte dominated vasculitis associated lesion); and
  • osteolysis

Depuy ASR patients are at risk for needing a painful revision surgery in which the unsafe DePuy hip implant is removed and replaced. DePuy admits that 10,000 patients may require revision surgery, but this calculation may significantly underestimate the actual number of DePuy hip revision surgeries that will be necessary.

DePuy waited to recall its ASR hip implant systems well after published articles had outlined the hazards of the device, and after these studies were confirmed by hundreds of Adverse Event Reports filed with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. In December 2009, the DePuy ASR hip implant was pulled from the Australian market. In May 2010, a Medical Device Alert about the implant was circulated in England. But DePuy failed to recall its implant in this country until three months later.
