Metal-on-Metal Hip Implants

We consistently hold the makers of unsafe medical devices accountable.

It is estimated that 500,000 people have received all-metal hip replacements. One problem related to metal hip implants is that the devices are more prone to fail than implants made of an alternate material after only a few years. This failure results in the patient having to endure revision surgery on the hip. In addition, over time, metal-on-metal hip implants release tiny metal ion particles that cause the bone, tendons, ligaments and muscles around the hip to become inflamed, resulting in the loss of tissue and bone inside the hip joint. The metal particles find their way into the blood stream as well, and may result in heavy metal blood poisoning.

Four of the most problematic metal-on-metal hip implants are the Stryker Rejuvenate and ABGII, the Biomet system, Zimmer Durom Cup,  and the DePuy ASR hip replacements.

Hundreds, if not thousands, of Americans are now suffering after receiving unsafe hip implants made by Stryker Orthopaedics. But it wasn’t supposed to be this way. Since 2006, as many as 13,000 Americans have received the Zimmer Durom Cup hip implant. The medical device is primarily used in this country for Total Hip Arthroplasty (THA). In a THA procedure, the surgeon removes the damaged hip joint and replaces it with a hip prosthesis consisting of a ball component and a socket that has an insert or liner. In the case of the Zimmer Durom Cup implant, all components of the device are metal. Read more

On August 26, 2010, DePuy Orthopaedics, Inc. announced the recall of its DePuy ASR Hip Replacement device. The recall came just five years after the unsafe medical device was first used in the United States. Read more
