Mesothelioma and Military Veterans
Nearly one-third of newly diagnosed mesothelioma cases occur in former members of the armed forces. Malignant mesothelioma, an extremely aggressive cancer caused by asbestos exposure, produces the formation of cancer cells in the sac that lines the chest, abdominal cavity, or heart.
Asbestos, the only known cause of mesothelioma, possesses insulating and fire-retardant properties. Many asbestos-containing products were used in the U.S. military and on navy ships. Due to this use, veterans who worked in close contact with these materials are at high risk of developing mesothelioma. Because this asbestos-related cancer has a long latency period, veterans’ symptoms may first appear decades after serving their country. Victims of the disease are often given only 18 months to live.
